About the Event
Join other CHES Families as we learn about the upcoming election! We will study the election process, branches of government, the history of voting, who is actually running for what office, and even have a mock election.
What: CHES Election Unit Study
When: Five Thursday Mornings - 9:00 a.m. - 12 noon (October 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29)
Target Audience: All CHES members and students
Where: Yates-Thagard Baptist Church
Cost: $5 per student; $20 maximum per family (collected at first class session)
Students will be divided into different age/grade level groups and will learn about the The Voting Process, Government Offices, The President, The History of Voting, and People (who is running for what office).
For those who have participated in the past, things will look a little different this year due to COVID-19. We will have a designated snack break, but we will not be providing it. We are asking parents to send a snack with each child this year. Additionally, instead of the students moving from classroom to classroom, the teachers will be the ones to switch. The students will be in the same room all day.
Nursery care will be provided for infants or toddlers who are too young to participate.
PreK and all grade levels above are encouraged to attend. The deadline to register is Friday, September 18, 2020.* (Due to COVID, we will not be able to have "unlimited" registrations this year. So, we will close each class as it fills up. We will keep this page updated so that everyone will know when classes fill up). Registrations will be processed in the order they are received.
A planning meeting for parents will be held on Tuesday, September 22nd at 7:00 p.m. at Yates-Thagard Baptist Church. Teaching teams and student groups will be assigned. Teaching teams will be provided with a list of suggested topics and ideas for their classes.
Our CHES Unit Studies are always an enriching and rewarding experience for both students and parents! Please plan to join us!
Please list the student’s name and grade level (or nursery if infant or toddler) on the sign-up form.
What is expected of the parent(s)? You will be responsible for teaching, co teaching or assisting with a class. We ask that you provide us with a 1st and 2nd job preference. Please indicate your 1st and 2nd choice for your role at the Unit Study. We will do our best to give each parent their 1st or 2nd choice of assignments. Please do not be apprehensive about teaching, as the Unit Study is designed to be hands-on, interesting, and fun for the students and the parents.
Choices include:
-The Voting Process (topics covered will include registering to vote, campaigning, electoral college, debates and more)
-Government Offices (topics covered will include the 3 Branches of Government, the Supreme Court, Term Limits, and information about local offices)
-The President (topics covered will include The White House, Transportation, The First Lady, The Cabinet, Powers, and more)
-History of Voting (topics covered will include The Pledge of Allegiance, The Right to Vote, The Creation of the Political Parties, the Symbols of the Political Parties, and more)
-People (topics covered will include who is actually currently running for office in each level of government)

-Classroom Parent (2 parents will be assigned to each class that will stay with them all day, will also disinfect the classrooms at the end of each day)

Please Read and Confirm that You Understand and Agree to our new Unit Study Policies:
Due to the COVID19 situation and the upcoming flu season, we have been asked to abide by the following rules at Yates Thagard Baptist Church during our Election Unit Study in October 2020.
- SAFE DISTANCING
Please practice safe-distancing measures in the classrooms, hallways, and restrooms, etc. Where this is not possible, we are encouraged to use masks.
- SYMPTOMS OF ILLNESS
When anyone has recent or present symptoms of illness please do not enter the facility or attend classes: Such as: flu like symptoms, fever, body aches, nausea, diarrhea, sore throat, runny nose, coughing, shortness of breath, etc.
If anyone has had recent contact with a person who has COVID, or the flu, or a viral respiratory infection, or who has tested positive for COVID, please do not enter the facility or attend classes until a proper time of quarantine has expired.
If anyone has attended classes and has become ill with COVID, or the flu, or a viral respiratory infection, this must be reported to one of the Unit Study leaders so that we can communicate this with the church and so that proper measures can be taken for the protection of other Unit Study participants and the church.
- SANITATION PRACTICES
Personal Hygiene:
Please ensure to use frequent hand-washing and hand sanitizing practices while using the facility. (Hand sanitizer will be available in every classroom).
We will check each person’s temperature when entering the facility.
Facemasks are not mandated but neither are they discouraged. Please use wise discretion whether your situation should require facemasks or not.
Facility Sanitation:
CHES Election Unit Study will be responsible for sanitizing all high-touch areas in classrooms and restrooms. Such as: door knobs, table surfaces, chairs, appliances, faucets, etc.
Please refrain from using other classrooms, or other areas of the building, or equipment or instruments not requested or designated for your ministry use.
Minimal toys will be available in the nursery, and everything must be sanitized at the end of each day.
- SNACK
This year, we are asking that each student bring their own snack and water to unit study. We will have snack time each day, but it will look different than it has in the past. Each student has always been encouraged to bring a back pack or bag, and this year we ask that you send a drink and water bottle/sippy cup with your child to be consumed during snack time. Please be sure that your child’s cup is labeled 😊.
