About the Event

Join other CHES Families to tour Reed Gold Mine in Midland, NC.

Reed Gold Mine is the site of the first documented gold find in the United States. From this discovery, gold mining spread gradually to nearby counties and eventually into other southern states. During its peak years gold mining was second only to farming in the number of North Carolinians it employed. The estimated value of gold recovered reached over one million dollars a year. North Carolina led the nation in gold production until 1848, when it was eclipsed by the great rush to California.

We will do a guided tour through 450 feet of restored minework.  The tours are $2.00 per adult and $1.00 per child. (This is $2.58 and $1.54 with PayPal fees).

Panning for gold is also available. Sessions typically last 45 minutes and have a cost of $2.14 per person ($2.73 with PayPal fees). Children under the age of 8 would need to partner with an adult due to heights of the troughs we pan in and the weights of the pans themselves. During the session we teach you one of the historical ways to pan for gold and have instructors with you the entire time.

There are exhibits and an orientation film at the visitor center.  There is a gift shop, and we have been asked to communicate that due to the size of the gift shop, no more than 10 people are allowed in the gift shop at the same time.

They have picnic tables onsite, so please bring lunches if you'd like to picnic with other CHES Families.

We are limited on space for this one but they will give us a tour on a different day if we fill this one up.
