About the Event

Who:  CHES Students (ideally upper middle and high schoolers – 13 years old and up)

What:  An academic, year-long, once-per-month meeting of CHES students to gather together and learn about the writing style and works of William Shakespeare.

When:

-Eight monthly meetings (September 15, 2022 to May 18, 2023 – no December meeting)

-Meetings take place on the 3rd Thursday of each month

-Time 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. with a finale performance for family and friends one evening TBD in May

Where:

-Monthly meetings will take place at the Whispering Pines Community Center Building on Ray’s Bridge Road. The finale performance will take place at the outdoor amphitheater space at Nancy Kiser Park in Carthage.

Why:

-To study the works of William Shakespeare, learn about his writing style, and perform for an audience in an example of Shakespearean Theater.  Students will read three (3) tragedies and two (2) comedies from Shakespeare’s collection of works.  A finale theatrical performance at an outdoor amphitheater will give students a chance to showcase what they have learned.

How:

-Students will read one selection (approximately 20-30 pages – a tragedy or a comedy – prior to class.  Students will discuss the characters, plot, setting, conflict, and theme in-depth during class.  Special attention will be given to vocabulary and famous Shakespearean “sayings”.  Toward the end of the school year, students will be assigned speaking parts in various skits, rehearse lines, and prepare costumes for our theatrical performance at the finale in May.

Materials/Cost:

-The cost of the study is $10 per student.  This is to be paid at the first introductory meeting in September.  At the first introductory meeting, each student will receive a paperback copy of Charles and Mary Lamb’s Tales from Shakespeare as well as a class folder and all of the required photocopies.
